Who? What? Where?
In the beginning…
This event grew out of the long-running annual Boston Arts Festival, which has been taking place in Christopher Columbus Park since 2003.
The current organizers rescued it from oblivion and took it over from the City if Boston in 2016. We switched the focus to showcasing local musicians and visual artists, living within the 495 loop.
We always receive many more musician submissions that we can accommodate in our two day festival, so in 2017 we put on a one day free concert in the Boston Common, featuring Boston bands that were… too loud…to perform in the small park in the Boston’s North End.
It took all of 2018 to make and implement the plan to have our 2019 two day festival on City Hall Plaza. DAve Crespo of Spo and Heather Timmons of Tiny Oak Booking joined with us to put on a fantastic event. With three stages staggering concert music and a beer garden by Winter Hill Brewery (our presenting sponsor), DAve and Heather coordinated 50 bands and ran production.
Knowing City Hall Plaza would be undergoing renovations through all of 2020, we were still deciding on a venue when the Covid shutdown happened. We have switched to a virtual festival, streaming Boston bands live from five different locations throughout the city – Midway Cafe, The Jungle Community Music Club, Audio Chemists Creative Studio, The Mixing House, and Terry Hanley Audio Systems.
You can watch the streams on Facebook or YouTube, and after the festival the videos will be posted on our YouTube channel.

Why?
That’s a good question. We do this because we are passionate about music and the arts. We are creative people and we want to help and support other creative people and our community. Boston has so many talented artists and musicians and they are all deeply struggling right now due to Covid and the economy. We are losing our live music venues left and right and it is heartbreaking. Not only are we losing our venues we are losing our musicians to California and Nashville.
We feel it’s important and imperative to support our creatives and keep them here in Boston! Give them chances for publicity and exposure, opportunities to perform and sell, advance and flourish.
How?
The Boston Local Music Festival is a collaboration of volunteers. DAve Crespo and Heather Timmons are donating a tremendous amount of time, energy, and stress organizing the bands, the venues and the sound equipment, and the streaming logistics. Jen and Pete are donating countless hours to the website, the social media, and publicity. Our first festival was sponsored by some local artists and vendors in addition to Winter Hill Brewery, such as Milly’s cookies and the Moyzilla food truck. This year we have no sponsors so it is truly being run on a shoestring budget, and dependent on the venues to volunteer their spaces for our performances.
Special thanks to…
Midway Cafe, The Jungle Community Music Club, Audio Chemists Creative Studio, The Mixing House, TinyOak Booking, The Boston Arts Festival, Terry Hanley Audio Systems, and our hosts Josh, Mary Frances Church, and Michele.
Can I help?
Yes! If you donate to the Boston Local Music Festival your support will go directly to making next year’s live event happen. You can donate directly to the bands that you like if you want to support their efforts and careers, and help them not starve. You can donate directly to the venues that are supporting us including the Midway Café, the Jungle Community Music Center, Audible Chemists, Terry Hanley Sound and The Mixing House.
We could also use volunteers at next year‘s festival!
